Your own cloud, on drives you own.

Connect your drives to the Mac at home. On your other Macs they show up in Finder, wherever you are.

Your drives stay home.

Plug them into the Mac at home, the way you always have. MountedStorage shares every external drive on it with the Macs you pair. They can open and copy anything, but can’t change or delete it.

And show up wherever you are.

Pair your laptop once, with an invite from the Mac at home. Studio Mac then shows up in Finder with every external drive on it, on any network and with no port forwarding. In Finder they’re read-only.

All 30 TB, on the road.

Open last year’s footage on the drive at home and it plays, with nothing to download first. MountedStorage reads only the part you watch, and the rest of the clip stays on the drive.

No monthly bill for your own footage.

MountedStorage runs on a Mac at home, with drives you own. Each one stays an ordinary drive: unplug it, take it to a shoot, and it works in any Mac.

12 TB in iCloud+

$720 a year

$59.99 a month, for as long as your files stay there. Apple keeps them in its data centres, away from your house.

12 TB on your own drives, with MountedStorage

$0 for the app

What you pay for instead: a Mac that stays on at home, the power it uses, and drives you buy once.

There’s no offsite copy. If a drive fails or the house floods, iCloud would still have your files and your drives wouldn’t, so keep a backup of anything you can’t replace. The app is free. Vault, an optional paid offsite backup, is how we plan to make money.

iCloud+ 12 TB is $59.99 a month in the US as of October 2026, $719.88 over a year.

Your devices, and the links you make.

Files go from your Mac at home to the Macs you’ve paired with it, and to the people you send a link, encrypted end to end. MountedStorage’s own servers aren’t in the path at all.

Encrypted end to end

Your Macs connect directly over iroh (QUIC) whenever they can. When they can’t, a relay run by n0, Inc., the company behind iroh, passes the traffic along. It carries data it has no key to read.

Paired once, with an invite

On the Mac at home, Add a Device… makes a single‑use invite that lasts 15 minutes. Once your laptop uses it, each Mac knows the other by its key, and only paired devices can browse the drives.

Read-only in Finder

Your other devices can open, play and copy files, but can’t change, move or delete them. The one write is photo backup, which only adds files to each device’s own folder. Phones you invite start with it on and Macs with it off; Macs paired before 0.2.1 keep it on until you turn off Allow Photo Backup.

Links you can turn off

Share a Link… in the menu bar makes a link to one file or folder that lasts 1, 7 or 30 days. Whoever opens it in the free Mac app gets that item only, straight from your Mac, until it expires or you choose Turn Off Link. As with any direct connection, they can see your Mac’s IP address.

Questions

How fast is it away from home?

As fast as the internet at home can upload. Only the part you play is sent, so a clip starts in seconds as long as its bitrate is below that upload speed. On a 50 Mbps upload (about 6 MB/s), H.264 and HEVC files and proxies play smoothly; a four-minute, 40 GB ProRes or BRAW clip runs at about 1.3 Gbps and won’t. Copying the whole clip to your laptop takes about two hours. Direct connections are fastest; through the relay it’s slower.

Is it a backup?

No. MountedStorage lets you reach your drives; it doesn’t keep a second copy of them. If a drive fails, its files are gone, so keep a backup of anything you can’t replace, for example with Time Machine on another drive. Vault, an optional paid offsite backup, is planned.

Who can see my drives?

Every device you’ve paired with an invite from the Mac at home can open and copy from every external drive connected to it. There’s no choice per drive yet, and the Mac’s own internal disk is never shared. To take a device’s access away, choose it under Your devices in the menu on the Mac at home, then Remove…. It takes effect at once, including for anything the device is opening. Someone you send a share link can download only the file or folder in that link, until it expires or you turn it off.

Can my other devices change or delete files?

No. In Finder on your other Macs the drives are read-only: you can open, play and copy files, but not save, rename, move or delete anything on them, so you can’t copy new files onto the drives at home from away. The one exception is photo backup, which the iPhone app (in TestFlight) uses. It only adds files, into that device’s own backup folder, and never overwrites one. In 0.2.1, phones you invite start with backup on and Macs with it off, and devices paired earlier keep the setting they had. Turn it on or off for each device with Allow Photo Backup in the MountedStorage menu.

What happens when the Mac at home is off or asleep?

Its drives drop out of Finder until it’s back. Turn on Keep Mac Awake While Sharing in the MountedStorage menu, and leave it plugged in. If someone is downloading from a link you shared, their download waits and carries on when your Mac wakes.

Does the person I share with need MountedStorage?

Yes, the free app, on a Mac. The link opens in it, and they download straight from your Mac whenever they’re ready.

What do I need?

A Mac with Apple silicon running macOS 13 or later with your drives connected, and MountedStorage on each Mac you want to reach them from, paired once with an invite. Drives formatted APFS, HFS+ or exFAT work fully; NTFS drives are read-only. Setup takes three steps, listed on the Download page.

What does it cost?

The app is free. Vault, an optional paid offsite backup, is how we plan to make money.

Who makes MountedStorage?

Tauren Brown, an independent developer. The Mac app is signed with his Apple Developer ID (Team ID KTQQGY9MSJ) and notarized by Apple. You can write to him at hello@mountedstorage.com.

Leave the drives at home. Take everything with you.

MountedStorage is free for Mac.
