Updates

MountedStorage doesn’t check for updates or update itself, so it never contacts us. New versions are posted on this page with their release notes; check back here to see what’s new.

To update, quit MountedStorage, download the new disk image and drag the app to Applications, replacing the old one. Paired devices, share links and the search index are kept in the app’s folder, so they carry over.

What it installs, and how to remove it

What it installs

  • The app, in Applications. It lives in the menu bar, with a Library window for search.
  • Its folder, ~/Library/Application Support/MountedStorage: paired devices, share links, settings, the search index and thumbnails.
  • Its keys, in your login Keychain, as items named MountedStorage device key. They identify your Mac to your other devices.
  • A folder for other Macs’ drives, ~/MountedStorage. The app shows them in Finder through macOS’s built-in NFS client, so there’s no kernel extension, system extension or helper tool.
  • A login item, only if you ask. Start MountedStorage at Login is off until you turn it on, which adds ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.mountedstorage.mac.plist.
  • An administrator prompt, only for Share on Home Network, because that changes macOS File Sharing.

Keep Mac Awake While Sharing is on by default: while a drive is shared, a device is paired or a share link is live, the Mac doesn’t fall asleep on its own.

How to uninstall

  1. Turn off Share on Home Network for any drive you shared, and turn off Start MountedStorage at Login.
  2. Choose Quit MountedStorage. It disconnects other Macs’ drives before it quits.
  3. Move MountedStorage from Applications to the Trash.
  4. To remove its data too, delete ~/Library/Application Support/MountedStorage and ~/MountedStorage, and in Keychain Access delete the items named MountedStorage device key. Any share links you made stop working.

Photo backups stay on your drives, in the MountedStorage Backups folder.

What’s in 0.2.1

October 25, 2026. Fixes for four security problems in 0.2.0. Nothing else changed. If you use 0.2.0, update each of your Macs.

  • Remove… for each device under Your devices on the Mac at home. It takes effect at once: the device’s open connections close, so anything it’s opening or backing up stops. Backups it already made stay on the drive. A removed device can come back only with a new invite. In 0.2.0 the only way to take a device’s access away was to unpair every device.
  • Keys in the login Keychain. The keys that identify your Mac to your other devices, and the key for share links, move from files in the app’s folder into your login Keychain the first time 0.2.1 opens. The files are deleted once the Keychain has the keys, and your devices stay paired. Copies of the old files in earlier backups and APFS snapshots aren’t removed.
  • The connection to Finder is locked to MountedStorage’s own mount. On a Mac that shows another Mac’s drives, the app serves them to macOS’s NFS client on 127.0.0.1. It now answers only the mount MountedStorage makes, and ~/MountedStorage is readable only by your user account. In 0.2.0, other software and other user accounts on that Mac could mount the drives too, read-only.
  • Photo backup starts on only for phones you invite. Macs you pair from now on start with it off; turn it on for one with Allow Photo Backup. iPhone app builds from before this change pair with it off, so tick it once for those.

Macs you paired before 0.2.1 keep photo backup on until you untick Allow Photo Backup for each one under Your devices. Devices keep the setting they had, and in 0.2.0 it was on for every device.

After updating, don’t go back to 0.2.0. It looks for the key files that 0.2.1 moved into the Keychain, so it would give your Mac a new identity: your devices would need pairing again, and share links you’d made would stop working.

What’s in 0.2.0

October 25, 2026. Share links: send someone a file or folder from your drives without uploading it first.

  • Share a Link… in the menu bar: on the Mac with the drives, pick a file or folder on an external drive and how long the link works, 1, 7 or 30 days. The link is copied, ready to paste into a message. A whole drive can’t be shared.
  • The person you send it to opens the link in MountedStorage on their Mac, which is free. It shows what’s offered and asks before downloading into Downloads. The file comes straight from your Mac, end-to-end encrypted.
  • Downloads resume after a dropped connection or a restart, wait for your Mac if it’s asleep or offline, and start the file over if it changes partway through, so you never get a mix of two versions. Downloaded files are quarantined like any download.
  • Live links are listed in the menu with the time they have left. Turn Off Link stops a link at once, including downloads in progress. Keep Mac Awake While Sharing now counts live links too.
  • A link clicked in a browser opens a page on mountedstorage.com with an Open in MountedStorage button; it doesn’t open the app directly yet. You can also copy the link and choose Download from a Share Link… in the MountedStorage menu. Links can’t be opened on an iPhone or Windows yet.
  • The menu bar icon is the MountedStorage folder.

How links are kept safe, and what they reveal, is on the Security page.

What’s in 0.1.0

The first release, October 22, 2026.

  • A menu bar app that lists the external drives connected to your Mac.
  • Remote access built in: pair another Mac with a one-time invite, and this Mac’s external drives appear in Finder there, read-only, over an encrypted connection from anywhere. No router setup and nothing else to install.
  • Share on Home Network: turn on macOS File Sharing for one drive from the menu.
  • A Library window that searches every external drive, including ones that are unplugged, by file name, camera details, text in pictures, words spoken in videos (on macOS 26) and what’s in the picture. Indexing and search run on your Mac.
  • Thumbnails and poster frames for photos and video, including Blackmagic RAW when DaVinci Resolve or Blackmagic RAW Player is installed.
  • Photo backup from the iPhone app, which is in TestFlight: add-only, into each phone’s own folder, and never past 95 percent of a drive.
  • Keep Mac Awake While Sharing and Start at Login.

Coming later

  • iPhone. The iPhone app is in TestFlight, Apple’s beta testing service, and isn’t on the App Store yet.
  • Windows. A Windows app is planned.
  • Vault, an optional paid offsite backup. The app is free. Vault is how we plan to make money.
